Langfields Delivers Critical Turbine Bellow Overhaul at EDF Torness

Our Langfields Dunfermline facility has successfully completed a significant turbine pipework bellow overhaul at EDF’s Torness nuclear power station, working on behalf of specialist industrial services company TEAM Inc.

The project required Langfields to plan, fabricate, and deliver replacement bellows across two turbine units within a condensed timeframe. A challenge the team met through precision engineering, innovative on-site thinking, and a commitment to round-the-clock delivery.

The Scope

Each of the two units contained three bellows, with Langfields responsible for the full fabrication and welding process. To ensure the work could be carried out efficiently and without disruption to the station’s operations, both units were removed off-site entirely. This approach significantly reduced critical path downtime at Torness, allowing EDF’s wider programme to remain on schedule.

To support the overhaul, the Langfields engineering team designed and built a bespoke jig frame for each unit – a custom solution that provided the stability and precision required for a scope of this nature.

Delivered on Time, Around the Clock

With the engineering solution in place, the Langfields team implemented a coordinated 24-hour working schedule to meet the project deadline. The full scope was successfully completed within three weeks.

That turnaround is a reflection of the experience and dedication across the Dunfermline facility, from project management and frame design through to material procurement and the fabrication team on the shop floor.

A Valued Partnership

Langfields has built a trusted working relationship with TEAM Inc., developed via close collaboration on the project.

Commenting on the project, TEAM Inc. said: “What stood out most was the clear alignment in our approach to safety and quality. Both teams share a culture of getting the job done right, with no compromises, which was critical to successfully delivering this high-profile scope within a reduced timeframe.

The collaboration between Langfields and TEAM has enabled us to deliver a complex project safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. That achievement is a credit to everyone involved – from project management and frame design through to material purchasing, and especially Greig and his team in the fab shop.

It has been a pleasure working alongside such a dedicated and capable team.”

Looking Ahead

This project represents another milestone in our growing capability within the nuclear and energy sector. With a proven track record in complex fabrication scopes and a team built for demanding programmes, we look forward to continuing our partnership with TEAM Inc. and supporting further projects across the energy industry.
