Langfields commit to assigning each apprentice with a mentor to help provide the right support, to encourage both professional and personal growth, gathering feedback to improve the apprenticeship
programme and to meet evolving business needs.

  • Entry Requirements

    • Maths – Minimum Grade 4
    • English – Minimum Grade 4
    • Science – Minimum Grade 4
  • Programme Introduction

    All our apprentices are employed to contribute to the business through their skills within their role. In addition to this, the business will provide exposure to accelerated learning with skill development.

    Our apprenticeship programme is split into two different disciplines, welding and
    fabrication.

    Each programme has been developed over four years to complement the formal
    qualification.

    The goal is for our apprentices to complete their four-year programme with well-rounded practical experience of welding or manufacturing.

  • Competence

    Competence is the ability do to something successfully or effectively. To achieve competence requires the right level of knowledge, understanding, skill with a professional attitude.

    Throughout the programme our apprentices will be assessed against competencies required against the formal aspects of qualification with Langfields’
    requirements for learning, training and experience.

  • Duration

    The apprenticeship will be over a 4 year period with the objectives of the apprentices to have the opportunity to be the best, most accomplished in their
    choice of trade.

  • Programme Components

    Both of our apprenticeship programmes cover the following areas:

    • HSE
    • Understanding of equipment used in our industry for manufacturing and welding.
    • Knowledge of different materials and their properties
    • Welding processes
    • Nuclear skills
  • Welding Apprenticeship
    Components:

    • WPS Packs and Weld Maps
    • Weld Symbols
    • Welding Positions
    • Purging of welds
    • Automated welding
    • Welding process (including TIG/MIG/MMA/FCAW)
    • DPI Basics
    • Radiography Basics
  • Fabrication Apprenticeship Components:

    • Reading Manufacturing Drawings
    • Importance of Inspection Plan [ITP] for manufacturer
    • Knowledge of different materials and their properties
    • Understanding welding processes with the knowledge of controlling distortion.
    • Using hand tools correctly
    • Fabrication development including square to rounds, forming cones
    • Rolling and bending of materials.
  • Mentoring

    A good mentor will play a vital role in the progress of an apprentice’s career.

  • Roles and Responsibilities

    A mentor will be assigned to the apprentices to help to guide you through your apprenticeship. The role of the mentor is to:

    • Provide advice and support to the Mentee
    • Provide constructive feedback to the Mentee
    • Assist the Mentee by helping them to achieve their goals.
    • Commit time and effort to the mentoring process
    • Improve the Mentee’s teamwork and time management competencies
    • Support the Mentee’s on how to get things done in the working environment, how to navigate informal politics
  • Line Manager/Supervisor

    It will be the responsibility of the Line Manager/Supervisor to administer the programme. Their duties will include:

    • Taking responsibility for the overall development of the apprentice
    • Frequent informal feedback
    • Performance reviews
    • Providing the opportunity for skills development to navigate informal politics
